How to kick your sugar addiction to the curb!

I've already posted about how unhealthy sugar is for the body (http://theworkoutshop.blogspot.com/2010/11/pour-some-sugar-on-me.html) now it's time to learn how to kick those sugar cravings to the curb for good!

- Eat regularly: Ideally every 2 - 3 hours to maintain your blood sugar levels.
- Eat unprocessed whole foods: Look for things that grow in nature, like an apple!
- Start the day with a fruit smoothie - A healthy start to the day with natural carbohydrates will set the tone for the rest of the day.
- Eat healthy fat and protein at every meal - this also keeps blood sugar levels stable.
- Add spices to your cooking - Coriander, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and cardamon will naturally sweeten your food and reduce cravings.
- Add Omega3, Fatty Acids and Vitamin D3 to your diet - nutrient deficiencies make cravings worse.
- Exercise - movement reduces tension in the body, increases energy and reduces the need for a sugar boost.
- Sleep! - When your body is fatigued it craves sugar for energy.
- Detox - cut all sugar from your diet to reduce your cravings (http://theworkoutshop.blogspot.com/2010/11/detoxdo-you-need-it.html)
- Curb emotional eating - journal when you crave sugary treats, perhaps there's an emotional connection
- Keep it Out - Keep sugary snacks out of your home and office.
- Don't use artificial sweeteners - they do not lessen your desire for sugar, and they are chemicals!
- Read the label - the longer the list of ingredients the more likely one is sugar
- Learn about sugar - there are many forms of sugar: corn syrup, corn sugar, high fructose corn syrup, sucrose, dextrose, honey, molasses, turbinado sugar, brown sugar
- Look out for hidden sugar - Most of the complex carbs we eat like bread, bagels and pasta aren't complex at all and are highly refined and act like sugar in the body and should be avoided
- Relax - when hit with a craving find a quiet spot and take deep breaths, it will pass
- Get outside - go for a walk, in nature. After 10 -20 the craving will pass
- Drink water - dehydration often presents itself as a craving for sugar
- Eat - have a piece of fruit if the craving won't pass
